Thanks to its rich diversity, South Africa is often described as a world in one country. Well, the region of KwaZulu Natal can easily be described as South Africa in one province! In this 14-day itinerary, you will get a fantastic mix of the best this beautiful area has to offer. Starting in the Drakensburg with the most spectacular mountain scenery in South Africa. Then it’s off to the Battlefields to hear the utterly fascinating story of one of the most famous places of historic and cultural importance. Followed by a 3 night safari adventure at Phinda Private Game Reserve, truly a magical place that is high up at the top of our list of favourite places. Spend 2 nights in St Lucia, the largest estuary in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And to round it off, a relaxing stay at the Oyster Bay Hotel, a legendary beach hotel that some argue makes the best curries in South Africa.

In the picturesque and peaceful foothills of the Drakensburg Mountains, Kamburg’s well known for its Appalachian horses and for trout fishing in the Bushman’s river. Being at the door step of Giant’s Castle Nature Reserve you will be able to do amazing hikes and view one of the best examples of Bushman paintings in Southern Africa.

Day 3: Kamburg – KwaZulu Natal Battlefields

Self-drive to the KwaZulu Natal Battlefields, known for its interesting ruins, artefacts, old forts and battle grounds dating back to the many battles and skirmishes of the 18th & 19th centuries.

Day 4: KZN Battlefields

Get a fascinating peak into the area’s bloody and tumultuous past. Fugitives Drift Lodge offers a complimentary battle tour.

Day 5: KZN Battlefields – Phinda Private Game Reserve

Self-drive to Phinda Private Game Reserve where your accommodation includes 2 safaris per day and all meals.

The Phinda Private Game Reserve offers many activities besides your stay at the lodge: A 1-hour nature walk, a Luxury Walking Adventure, a Tracking, a Private Safari and a Photographic Safari. However, you can book many more adventurous activities.

Day 8: Phinda Private Game Reserve – Isimangoliso World Heritage Site

Self-drive to Isimangoliso World Heritage Site where you will stay at the secluded Makakatana Bay Lodge, situated on the forested banks of Lake St. Lucia.

Day 9: Isimangoliso World Heritage Site

Makakatana Bay Lodge gives their guests the opportunity to enjoy a broad range of activities in this beautiful and biologically, diverse area. Besides the usual safaris, you could do Scuba Diving, Whale Watching Safaris or Deep Sea Fishing.

Day 10: Isimangoliso World Heritage Site – Umhlanga

Self-drive to Umhlanga. Enjoy the Umhlanga’s beachfront and all what your 5-star luxury hotel has to offer.

Take a stroll along Durban’s Golden Mile or explore uShaka Sea World. Make sure to catch one of their famous Dolphin shows. For all your shopping needs visit Gateway Shopping Mall.

Day 12: Umhlanga – OR Tambo International Airport

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end. After check-out you will be heading to Durban Airport, to drop off the rental car and check in for your flight to Johannesburg and back home.
